Due to CRCT preparation and testing, we have not had a lot of time for science and social studies. To end the year we will study motion and simple machines. In social studies, we will spend a few days on the War of 1812 and Georgia. Here are some links that we will need: War of 1812 Web Quest Site, Site for Georgia Facts, Savannah Site.
We will also have some end of the year fun in math. Through the Math on the Menu project, students will create their own restaurant! They will create a menu and design their floor plan. Finally, they will create a PowerPoint to share with their classmates. We will need these sites . . . Web Quest for Day One. Also one the first day of the unit, students will pick a Mexican Restaurant and plan a meal for under $20 . . . . they can pick from Chevys Fresh Mex Restaurant, Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, and Azteca Mexican Restaurant.

Kites!

To celebrate the end of CRCT, we will use our geometery skills to make kites! Before we make them, we will complete a webquest using kites.org. On Wednesday, we will construct our kites by following the directions on from the Big Wind Kite Factory in Hawaii.

Learning with M&M's

This week marks the beginning of a new math chapter on graphing, statistics, and probability. The students will be learning how to find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of numbers. They will also be creating and examining the different types of graphs. Next week, we will focus on probability.

To help "sweeten" these concepts, we will use M&M's! Today, we began our M&M's project by predicting, counting, sorting, and recording data. Later in the week, we will use our data to create different types of graphs on the computer. We will also visit the official M&M's site to learn more and have a little fun with our favorite candy.

We will finish the chapter on measurement on Tuesday of this week. Our next math chapter is on fractions! We will learn how to write a fraction, using parts of a whole, naming fractions, and visualizing fractions. We will learn how to find equivalent fractions. We will also learn how to find the fractional part of a number, how to change improper fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions, and how to add and subtract fractions.

Mrs. Madsen's Brain Pop Videos

Mrs. Madsen will use two videos from BrainPop during her social studies lessons this week. The first video that she will show is on the causes of the American Revolution. I think that we are all ready to begin a new chapter in math - we have had enough division for a while. I enjoy this time of the year because math becomes a little more fun. It is time to get back to work! We will be very busy from now until the end of school. This week we will continue our division chapter by talking about divisibility and prime and composite numbers. Next week, we will learn how to find averages! To practice divisibility click 2, 3, or 5. Click here for a cool game using prime numbers. (another prime number activity) Finally, here is some more division and divisibility stuff.
In science, we are wrapping up our unit on electricity and magnetism. Next week, we will begin the first of two units on ecosystems (food chains). Last but not least, in social studies we are going to explore life in the thirteen colonies during to 1700's, Ben Franklin, and the French and Indian War. Our next topic in social studies will be the American Revolution!
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the Georgia Southern student teacher who will joining us on January 9th. Mrs. Amanda Madsen will stay with us until the end of April. She is very excited and anxious to get to work. Mrs. Madsen will head-teach for four weeks, during that time she will teach a unit on weather. Welcome, Mrs. Madsen!

Electrifying Electricity

This week we began our science unit on electricity. We started off our unit with some hair raising experiments on static electricity. We also used BrainPop to further develop our understanding of static electricity. Our next topic will be current electricity. We will do a webquest to learn more about types of electricity, kinds of circuits, and safe practices around electricity. We will end the unit by investigating the characteristics of magnets and developing electromagnets.

We have started December off with great excitement! We are learning how to divide! Before you can divide large numbers, you must know your facts! Practice the basic facts by using flashcards!

A Busy Week

On Wednesday, we will go to the Middle school and take a tour of the Frontier Village. On Thursday, we will have a social studies test on the Thirteen Colonies. We are really doing well with multiplication! Most of the students know their facts and are getting very proficent at multiplying two, three, AND four digit numbers by a one digit number. The students can also estimate products and use mental math strategies to find products. During the week of November 7, I will be gone to Atlanta for THREE days. I am attending the Georgia Educational Technology Conference. I hope to come back with lots of free goodies and lots of great ideas to use in the classroom. While I am out, the students will have the opportunity to use the computer to sharpen their mutliplication (and other) skills. We have wrapped up our unit on Native Americans and we begun learning about explorers. It all began with Marco Polo's trip to the east. Soon, Christopher Colombus, John Cabot, Balboa, deLeon, Henry Hudson, and Jacques Cartier were soon in search of new treasures and the fastest way to get to them. Multiplication Magic!

We are moving right along in math! This week, we will begin mulitplication. We will focus on terms related to multiplication, such as factors, products, and multiples. Illuminations has a great site that offers a challenging way to practice facts by choosing factors and making products. We will also learn about the multiplication properties. The Library of Virtual Manipulatives provides a neat way for students to visualize muliplication of two numbers. Of course, the most important thing about multiplication is knowing the basic facts. So please do not forget to practice those flash cards!

Place Value and Rounding

Our first topic of math for the year will be place value. We will expand on the concepts that students were introduced in third grade and we will also work with larger numbers (up to millions). We will begin with learning how to write numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form. We will then review how to identify the value of a digit in a number, for instance the value of the 2 in 529 is 20. After comparing numbers, we will explore the concept of rounding. Our Super Solar System

We will start science off with an exciting study of the solar system. The internet offers a wealth of knowledge about the great beyond. We will use enchantedlearning.com to learn about the nine planets. We will visit geocities.com to discover constellations. Last but not least, we will use BrainPop.com to learn about the moon and its phases, the sun, and seasons. NASA has a great site on the current space shuttle mission. I hope you get a chance to visit these sites and have some fun (and learn a little too)!

Lovely Landforms

We will begin social studies with a study of geography. While learning about maps and globes, the students will be introduced to landforms that can be found in the United States. Some of the landforms that we will be learning about are Death Valley, the Great Plains, the Great Basin, the Great Lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico.
